Description
Democrats gamefowl are an American bloodline started in the early 1960s by Blondie Rollan and William McRae on their Alabama farm. Both men were strong supporters of President John F. Kennedy, and when he won the presidency they named their new family the Democrats. Buddy Payton later refined the line with additional Claret breeding.
Breeders generally describe the Democrat bloodline as roughly three parts Hatch and one part Claret base, with the Claret side producing the white-legged variants that still appear. Typical birds run burgundy to dark red with white streaks at the wings and tail, white to yellow legs, big shoulders, and a short curved beak, with about 80 percent of males carrying a pea comb. Within the breed, the Democrat stands alongside the other best known American families, Hatch, Kelso, Sweater, Claret, and Roundhead, each a maintained breeding family rather than a separate breed. We maintain the family on our heritage gamefowl farm with documented matings, in a flock enrolled in the National Poultry Improvement Plan and Pullorum-Typhoid tested.
