Description

The shamo rooster is a tall, upright Japanese breed with hard, close fitting feathers, heavy bone, and a nearly vertical station that no other yard bird matches. The name itself traces to Siam, the old name for Thailand, where the breed’s ancestors originated before Japanese breeders refined the type over centuries; in Japan, Shamo covers a family of hard feather breeds graded by size, with the large O Shamo the best known. The Livestock Conservancy classifies the Shamo as a critically endangered heritage breed, which puts real weight on every well bred bird that enters a breeding pen. Ours run medium to large, with plumage in white, red, wheaten, and gold depending on the pairing.

That conservation listing is the practical reason serious keepers add a shamo chicken to their program. A heritage breed survives only when breeders hold quality stock, keep records, and raise the next generation to standard, and the Shamo is a standardized show breed in Japan, Europe, and the United States, so heritage preservation, exhibition, and conservation breeding are where these birds do their most valuable work. We select for the traits that define the type: upright carriage, strong beetle brow, muscular thighs, and calm confidence in the hand. For a contrast in how another region approaches height and reach, set this bird next to our Peruvian Rooster.

Toward people, a well handled Shamo is famously calm and tame. Like most heritage game breeds, males are territorial with other males, so house one rooster per pen with his hens; as a heritage rooster breeder, we house every male separately and recommend buyers do the same.
