Sweater Hen

Description

Sweater hens are the female side of the Sweater bloodline and the foundation of any serious Sweater breeding pen. This listing is for hens from our own Sweater matings, wheaten to light red females with the yellow legs typical of the line. The Sweater breeds true for leg color, plumage, and vigor, and that predictability, built on decades of documented selection, is what makes it a dependable foundation for a new breeding program.

Sweater brood hens are kept for one job, producing strong chicks that carry the line forward. Ours are raised on protein and calcium rich feed at an NPIP gamefowl farm, and we hold back brood stock on three criteria: vigor, conformation, and mothering. Game hens are modest, seasonal layers, typically producing roughly 55 to 100 small to medium tinted eggs a year, mostly in spring and summer, and they go broody readily and mother their chicks attentively.
