Description

Toppy gamefowl from the Ginn Grey line are one of the few topknot gamefowl families with a paper trail running back more than a century. Steve A. Ginn created the strain in the late 1800s, and the line was already famous enough in his lifetime to be talked about in the same breath as the country’s best known yards. The topknot, the crest of feathers on the head, is the trait that gives the line its name.

Our chain of custody is short and documented. Noah S. Crow walked birds for Steve A. Ginn and obtained stock directly from him in the early 1900s, receiving one or two birds a year. Paul Bond got the line from Noah S. Crow around 1960, and our Toppies came from Paul Bond. Every generation since has been raised on the Gamefowl Farms yard, which is about as clean as a heritage lineage gets.

Toppy gamefowl from the Ginn Grey line

Males range from light silver grey to solid white. The hens are strikingly uniform with fiery red eyes, and every hen carries a large topknot while only some males do. This line also lays heavily, almost twice as many eggs as our other breeds, which makes it unusually productive for a heritage gamefowl.

What you receive

You get photographs of the actual bird, NPIP paperwork, individual boxing at morning dispatch, USPS Express shipping, and a live arrival guarantee. Stags, pullets, pairs, and trios are offered. Toppy males are no different from other game lines in being territorial with other males, so plan an individual pen with shelter and shade for each one, with his own hens. For another line with a named, single source history, see our Rat Graves Leiper, or browse the whole gamefowl rooster collection.

Gerard Hatch roosters belong to the hatch family line, the green legged American gamefowl group that remains one of the most kept and most respected in heritage breeding. These birds are recognized for their athletic build, quick movement, and natural stamina, with the muscular frame, alert posture, and energetic nature that made the hatch family famous in the first place.

What sets a good hatch bird apart is structure. Strong legs, a balanced body, and a confident temperament are what breeders select for, and they are why farmers and heritage keepers value this line for its resilience and adaptability. Buying from us means the bird’s breeding is recorded on our yard, not guessed at, which is the simplest reason to buy roosters online from a breeder instead of a middleman.
